About Mesothelioma patients may benefit from Pfizer’s new cancer treatment

The beginning of this month saw Pfizer introduce a new cancer treatment to the medical community. From June 4th through June 8th, the Annual Society of Clinical Oncology met in Chicago Illinois, where the pharmaceutical giant presented its new drug. Specific to non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC)—comprising less than 5% of all cancer cases—crizotinib targets a genetic marker anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK), which may also be present in pleural mesothelioma tumor cells.

Pleural mesothelioma is one of two known types of the rare cancer. Affecting lung lining, pleural mesothelioma makes up about 80% of all mesothelioma cases. The other 20% affects linings of other abdominal organs and is called peritoneal mesothelioma. Both types are considered fatal and without cure.

Asbestos fibers cause malignant mesothelioma through inhalation or ingestion. Fibers become lodged in lung lining and begin a mutative process of healthy cells. This process turns into tumor development and lasts for twenty to fifty years. Most mesothelioma patients have no idea they were ever exposed to toxic asbestos and therefore have no idea they are developing the deadly cancer.

Characterized by such a long latency period, mesothelioma is extremely difficult to diagnose. Once symptoms begin to show mesothelioma is in its final and most aggressive stage; following diagnosis life expectancy averages just eighteen months. Although mesothelioma treatments exist, many patients choose palliative care rather than cancer-direct treatments. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy—standards in mesothelioma treatment—can be quite taxing on patients already struggling with the effects of the disease. Providers often choose to focus on pain management, raising quality of life, and extending life expectancy, rather that picking a battle with fatal mesothelioma.

Crizotinib showed promise in clinical testing by greatly increasing life expectancy in patients with advanced cases of NSCLC. Standard life expectancy for NSCLC cases peaks at 2 years; at which point only 20% of patients are alive. With crizotinib, 74% of patients tested were alive after one year, and 54% were alive after two—this is a great step in extending patient life expectancy in an arena of such characteristically low mortality rates.

New treatments are a welcome development in a world witnessing rising mesothelioma cases. Asbestos continues to be used globally and more so in developing countries where safety precautions are minimal, if existent, and health hazards go unchecked. Experts expect to see a rise in worldwide mesothelioma cases unless asbestos use is stopped immediately. Sadly, many struggling economies are dependant upon export or import of the toxic material keeping an end to asbestos use out of sight. Read More

About X-rays and light technology help uncover mesothelioma process

A group of Italian researchers have done an in-depth study on the effects of asbestos on the respiratory system. Much has been unknown about how asbestos actually begins cancerous growths that lead to lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. This study used synchrotron soft x-ray imaging and florescence microscopy to better examine the process.

Asbestos is considered a Type 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization. The same group estimates close to ninety thousand mesothelioma deaths worldwide, annually, if current asbestos use is not immediately curbed. Known to cause severe respiratory illnesses, the toxic chemical continues to be used globally, in many cases without proper health and safety precautions.

In the US asbestos has greatly diminished from use in countless industries. However, regular, heavy asbestos use typified most industries and manufacturing between the 1920s and 1980s. Even if asbestos use was completely discontinued today, it would take decades to rid the nation of its presence. In the mean time, the Environmental Protection Agency covers asbestos use and removal regulations in the Clean Air Act.

Through this recent study, Italian researchers report they have “revealed the location, distribution and elemental composition of asbestos bodies and associated nanometric structures.” Most notable is the formation of cancerous tumors. The body reacts to foreign asbestos fibers by wrapping them into pod-like clusters, called ‘asbestos bodies.’ This may be the body’s way of trying to isolate the intruding matter from healthy tissues. High silicon content was found close to the asbestos fibers, as well as the presence of magnesium, which may play a part in the cluster formation process.

In an article in journal Particle and Fibre Toxicity the researchers report, “The new results obtained by simultaneous structural and chemical analysis of tissue specimens have provided clear evidence that magnesium, in addition to iron, is also involved in the formation mechanisms of asbestos bodies.”

This research may prove incredibly beneficial in the fight against rare cancer mesothelioma. There is no known cure for mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is characterized by a long latency period followed by a grim prognosis. Average life expectancy after diagnosis is eighteen months. There are mesothelioma treatments available; patients are often administered a combination of surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and pain management. Read More

About Mesothelioma: Preparing for the First Medical Appointment

While mesothelioma is not one of the more common cancers, it is almost always caused by asbestos exposure—creating a justifiable worry for those who have worked around or have come close to the fibrous material. Mesothelioma is a serious ailment that strikes the protective lining covering many of the body’s organs. But it does not typically manifest noticeable symptoms until the advanced stages. At that point, mesothelioma is incurable, and treatment is of limited effectiveness.

This makes it crucial to diagnose mesothelioma as early as possible. It is imperative that those with a history of asbestos exposure seek medical attention when any mesothelioma symptoms—including chest pain, shortness of breath, painful coughing and unexplained weight loss—are present.

The possibility of mesothelioma is not so remote among asbestos workers, as the many lawsuits brought, and often won, by mesothelioma lawyers attest. That possibility can bring a great deal of anxiety.

So can a doctor’s appointment to check for the deadly disease? Knowing how to prepare for that visit—what to bring and what to ask about—can help reduce the anxiety. But more important, it can ensure that the visit is a productive one and that you get the information, and answers, you need.

Whether your appointment is with your family doctor or a specialist with expertise in mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases of the lungs or abdomen, there are general steps you should take before you arrive at his or her office. These include:

• Keep a record of the symptoms you may be experiencing, no matter how minor or ordinary they may seem.

• Make a record, too, of your work history—occupations, places of employment, and the circumstances and length of any asbestos exposure you may have experienced. Even short-term asbestos exposure should be noted, since mesothelioma has developed in individuals who came in contact with asbestos for as little as several days. If you have been involved in construction, demolition or renovation projects, be sure to note that, because these activities can be particularly worrisome. When asbestos is disturbed—as it can be in these types of work—the dangers are heightened. Asbestos fibers can be inhaled easily. They then lodge in the lungs, triggering mesothelioma, lung cancer or other diseases years or even decades later.

• Make a list of all medications, vitamins and supplements that you are taking. Note any allergic reactions you may have to specific drugs.

• Take along a friend or family member—not just for support but to have a second set of ears to absorb the extensive, often overwhelming and technical information the doctor may convey to you.

• Gather and bring your medical records, particularly any chest X-rays taken in the past.

• Prepare questions in advance. It’s far easier to talk to the doctor during the appointment than to track him or her down later, hoping for a moment on the phone while he or she is busy with other patients and work. Some key questions to ask: What are other potential causes for my symptoms? What is the best course of action? Are there specific hospitals or specialists you would recommend? Are there any good resources—print or online—that might be helpful?

Remember that many of the symptoms of mesothelioma can also be caused by other—and often far less harmful—diseases. It is important not to panic, even if you do have a long history of asbestos exposure. Take it one step at a time, prepare for the visit, and ask all the questions you need to. With luck, your first mesothelioma-related appointment will be your last.

What Are The Different Types Of Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the lungs (pleura), abdominal (peritoneum) and heart (pericardium). Its occurrence is greatest in the lungs with about two-thirds of all cases. The abdomen accounts for 20-30% of cases. Involvement of the pericardium or reproductive organs is rare. Unlike other forms of cancer that form a lump, mass or tumor mesothelioma spreads sheet like along the surface of the pleura or peritoneum and then extends into the tissue it surrounds.

Another aspect of mesothelioma is the hardening of the mesothelioma tissue that then forms a case like structure around the organs involved. In the case of pleural mesothelioma this would then restrict movement of the lungs making it difficult for an individual to take a deep breath. It does metastasize like other types of cancer but this usually occurs only after localized involvement is extensive. Read More

About Types of Mesothelioma ~ 9 Different Types of Mesothelioma

There are several types of mesothelioma. All but one are cancerous, and most are aggressive and deadly. Some types denote the area of the body that is affected. These include pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial. Other types denote the type of cell affected. These include epithelial and sarcomatoid. Mesothelial cells produce a lubricating fluid that protects organs as they function and move.

Pleural
Peritoneal
Pericardial
Benign
Malignant
Epithelial
Sarcomatoid
Biphasic
Papillary

Pleural mesothelioma
Pleural mesothelioma, which begins in the lungs, is the most common type of mesothelioma accounting for 75% of all diagnoses. The root cause is exposure to asbestos. Many professions and jobs utilized and were exposed to asbestos without taking precautions, thereby putting their workers at risk to breathe in the asbestos fibers that eventually cause mesothelioma.

The cancer attacks the lining of the lungs and ribs, known as the pleura. Because the symptoms of mesothelioma take twenty or more years to present themselves, the disease is usually in the advanced stages before a diagnosis is made.

The symptoms for pleural mesothelioma are common and often misdiagnosed. This creates even more delays in completing the appropriate diagnosis and seeking proper treatment.

If you have been exposed to asbestos, notify your physician to assist with the correct diagnosis of your symptoms. Otherwise, your doctor may assume more common medical ailments, such as pneumonia, to explain your condition.

Some symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:
Coughing
Fever
Shortness of breath
Weight loss

Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the stomach and abdomen, is second most common after pleural mesothelioma and accounts for less than 20% of all mesothelioma cases. This type of mesothelioma is often caused by ingesting asbestos fibers. The fibers can become trapped in the digestive system, creating a tumor.

As with other mesothelioma types, peritoneal mesothelioma has a long latency period thereby delaying diagnosis and impeding treatment. Because the symptoms are common to other ailments, diagnosis can be delayed.

Some symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include:
Swelling
Abdominal pain
Fever
Weight loss

Pericardial Mesothelioma
Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma and accounts for very few cases. This asbestos cancer affects the heart and its surrounding cavity. As with other mesothelioma types, pericardial mesothelioma has a long latency period thereby delaying diagnosis and impeding treatment.

Some symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include:
Persistent coughing
Chest pain
Palpitations
Shortness of breath

If you have been exposed to asbestos, make sure to notify your doctor so appropriate measures can be taken to ensure a correct diagnosis of your symptoms.
Benign Mesothelioma

Unlike all other forms of mesothelioma, benign mesothelioma is not cancerous. A tumor forms in the mesothelial layer around the heart, lungs, stomach or elsewhere in the abdomen and grows larger. However, it is not cancerous and does not spread to nearby tissues or other areas of the body.

The symptoms of benign mesothelioma are often similar to those of other types of mesothelioma, and depend, somewhat, on what area’s mesothelial lining is affected. Typically, they include:

Pressure, tightness, swelling or pain in the affected area
For peritoneal (abdomen): nausea, loss of appetite, bowel obstruction
For pericardial (heart): heart palpitations, shortness of breath, persistent cough
For pleural (lungs): shortness of breath, wheezing, persistent cough

Treatment for benign mesothelioma is usually surgery. The prognosis after surgery is excellent.
Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant mesothelioma is a general term that encompasses all cancerous types of mesothelioma. To learn more about each of the types of mesothelioma including symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and survival, follow these links:

Pleural
Peritoneal
Pericardial

Epithelial Mesothelioma
Epithelial mesothelioma is a malignant form of mesothelioma that specifically affects the epithelial cells. Epithelial cells build the tissue and membranes that line and protect the outside of organs as well as the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). 50% – 70% of all diagnosed cases of malignant mesothelioma are classified as epithelial, or epithelioid, mesothelioma. The symptoms of epithelial mesothelioma depend on the area or organ where the cancer is located such as the lungs, stomach or abdomen, or heart or if it has spread to other areas of the body.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma
Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is another form of malignant mesothelioma. It is responsible for between 7% and 20% of all mesothelioma cases. This type of mesothelioma can occur in most areas of the mesothelioid layer, and is classified by cell shape (oval-ish, irregular) and nucleus appearance (less visible, vague).

Symptoms are similar to other types of mesothelioma and depend on the area the disease begins and the stage of the disease. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma may be confused with other sarcoma types of cancer, and as a result may be more difficult to diagnose. There is some evidence to suggest that this type of mesothelioma may be even more aggressive and resistant to treatment than other types.

Biphasic Mesothelioma
Biphasic mesothelioma is diagnosed when a tumor is found in the patient that contains both epithelial mesothelioma cells and sarcomatoid mesothelioma cells—either mixed together or in separate areas of the tumor. Symptoms and treatment of the disease are similar to other types of mesothelioma and depend on the area the cancer begins, the stage the disease is in, and other factors.

Papillary Mesothelioma
Papillary mesothelioma is a very rare form of mesothelioma that is not well understood. It can occur in the heart, lungs, stomach or abdomen like other forms of mesothelioma, but also occurs in the ovaries and testicles. Some cases of papillary mesothelioma have been associated with asbestos exposure, others have not.

In a good portion of the cases that have been reported, the disease did not spread to other areas of the body, but it did show a high rate of recurrence. A uniform method of treatment has not been established, but surgery and chemotherapy have most often been used. Prognosis after treatment for this form of mesothelioma is often much better than other types of malignant mesothelioma. Read More

About The Different Types of Mesothelioma: Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is the name given to the cancer that attacks the lining of the abdomen. This type of cancer is caused by asbestos exposure, and it affects the lining that protects the contents of the abdomen and which also provides a lubricating fluid to enable the organs to move and work properly.

This disease is sometimes referred to as diffuse peritoneal mesothelioma, and this is where the cancer has spread out. Accountable for around ten percent of mesothelioma cases, this type asbestos-related cancer is the second most common (after Pleural Mesothelioma).

There are a number of symptoms for this disease. However, like all other types of mesothelioma, there is a very long latency period, and symptoms may not become evident for decades after exposure. This means that by the time symptoms have begun, it is often already too late to offer any real constructive treatment. Further delay can be caused due to the fact that the symptoms are generally non-specific and can therefore be attributed to a number of more common ailments. Unless your doctor is aware that you have been exposed to asbestos in the past, he or she is likely to look at other options before even contemplating mesothelioma. It is therefore important to let your doctor know of any exposure to this substance.

The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include: abdominal pains and weakness; weight loss; nausea; loss off appetite; abdominal swelling; bowel obstruction. Depending on the location of the tumour, additional problems can be experienced such as breathing problems and severe pains.

Treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma can also vary, and is dependant upon a number of factors. The doctor, once a diagnosis has been made, will make a recommendation based upon details such as: the extent of the cancer and how advanced it is; the patient’s general condition and health; past medical history of the patient; and the patient’s age.

Treatments include:
Surgery: This entails cutting out part of the lining and tissue from the abdomen in order to remove the tumour. Whether or not surgery is performed and how much tissue is removed will depend on how far the cancer has spread and how big the tumour is. It may sometimes be necessary to remove a lung or part of the diaphragm in order for surgery to succeed in removal of the tumour.

Radiation Therapy: This is where high energy x-rays are used to shrink tumours and kill off cancerous cells in the affected area. There are two ways to administer radiation therapy. The first is through external means, where a machine is placed outside the body and emits radiation through the body. The second is by placing a source of radiation directly to the affected area by way of plastic tubes. As well as administering the radiation treatment through the tubes, doctors are also able to administer any required drugs this way.

Chemotherapy: This is where a combination of drugs is used to try and kill off cancer cells. Drugs can be administered by mouth in tablet form, or you may have to have them administered intravenously via needle into a vein or a muscle. The drug can then enter the blood stream and travel through the body, hopefully killing off any cancer cells along the way.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma is responsible for many deaths each year. Although it is not the most common form of this cancer, many new cases come to light each year. However, with continued research and clinical trials, it may be possible to one day make this a curable disease. Read More

Property insurance a private transaction

I JUST renewed my property insurance and was surprised to find out that the premium had doubled since the last time I paid.

It appears that the Insurance Commission (IC) under Circular No. 21-2010 has “prescribed a minimum rate xxx for risks such as earthquake xxx and typhoon and flood xxx which rates are added to the basic property insurance that usually covers only fire and lightning.” (Underscoring, mine)

Be that as it may, property insurance transaction is a purely private contract between the insurer and the insured. What business then has the government in meddling with this contract, by injecting into it risks neither agreed upon nor even contemplated by the parties? It is clearly undue interference in a private transaction, which cannot be justified by a claim of public policy or under the guise of “for the benefit of all.”

If the purpose is to increase the reserve fund, then by all means, have the premium rate increased, but this should be confined only to the risk agreed upon for coverage, not risks dictated solely by the government for inclusion in the contract which, for all intents and purposes, may not be relevant at all. For example, why should I insure my property for the risk of flood when the area where it stands has not experienced flood for decades? It would be foolhardy to do so, if not downright silly.

If some insurance companies are in default with their commitment to clients, is the Insurance Commission powerless to take positive actions? Why resort to precautionary palliatives (such as including uncomprehended risks in a contract to thereby increase the rates), when punitive action is needed?

Worth mentioning is the fact that an increase of the premium rate on a singularly agreed upon risk may showcase its excessiveness. Masking such excessiveness with dictated additional risks is, to say the least, a dastardly way of providing a reserve fund. Read More

Appeals Court Upholds Health Reform Law's Insurance Mandate

On Wednesday, a three-judge panel at the Sixth U.S Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati in a 2-1 decision upheld a lower court ruling that the federal health reform law's individual mandate is constitutional, the New York Times reports (Sack, New York Times, 6/29).

Among the nearly two dozen challenges to the reform law, the decision marks the first time that a mid-level federal court ruled on the overhaul, according to the Washington Post (Markon, Washington Post, 6/29).

In addition, the Sixth Circuit's decision marks the first victory at the appeals level for the Obama administration in its defense of the law (McCarthy, National Journal, 6/29).

The lawsuit originally was filed in 2010 by the Michigan-based Thomas More Law Center and two individuals, alleging that Congress overstepped its legal authority by establishing the coverage mandate (Haberkorn, Politico, 6/29). The suit reached the appellate court after U.S. District Court Judge George Steeh in October 2010 upheld the constitutionality of the health reform law and individual mandate. Steeh also rejected the plaintiffs' motion to institute a temporary injunction against the overhaul (California Healthline, 1/21).

The Thomas More Law Center could petition the Supreme Court to overturn the Sixth Circuit panel's decision. The plaintiffs also could ask the full appellate court to consider their case, but that option is not expected, according to Politico (Politico, 6/29).

Majority Opinion Favoring the Mandate

In the majority opinion, Circuit Judges Boyce Martin and Jeffrey Sutton wrote, "We find that the minimum coverage provision is a valid exercise of legislative power by Congress under the commerce clause" (Washington Post, 6/29).

The judges added, "The activity of forgoing health insurance and attempting to cover the cost of health care needs by self-insuring is no less economic than the activity of purchasing an insurance plan."

They explained that the individual mandate is "facially constitutional" for two reasons: "First, the provision regulates economic activity that Congress had a rational basis to believe has substantial effects on interstate commerce," and "Congress had a rational basis to believe that the provision was essential to its larger economic scheme reforming the interstate markets in health care and health insurance" (New York Times, 6/29).

Sutton Becomes First GOP-Appointed Judge To Rule in Favor of Overhaul

Proponents of the overhaul and legal experts noted that in ruling in favor of the health reform law, Sutton became the first Republican-appointed federal judge to uphold the constitutionality of the individual mandate (Politico, 6/29).

According to CQ HealthBeat, Sutton -- who was appointed by President George W. Bush -- clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the most prominent conservative on the high court.

Widely considered to be "a pillar of conservative thought," Sutton's participation in the majority opinion likely deals "a blow" to opponents and challengers of the overhaul and the mandate, according to CQ HealthBeat (Norman, CQ HealthBeat, 6/29).

Proponents of the law hope that Sutton's favorable opinion of the overhaul will resonate with the conservative judges in the Supreme Court, which many expect will deliver the final decision on the constitutionality of the law and individual mandate sometime next year (Politico, 6/29). Read More

MANILA, Philippines – Andi Eigenmann is not the first girl in her family to get pregnant at a young age.

Her half-sister, actress Max Eigenmann, was only 17 years old when she had her first baby. But Max said she is not ashamed of it, and neither should Andi now that she is about to become a single mom.

“I’m not married. That’s something people will say something about, but at the end of the day, I’m a good mother and I do my best,” she said.

Maxi, now 23 years old with 2 children, was one of those who Andi had sought out after the latter learned that she is pregnant.

“She was a little bit shocked and a little bit scared of the situation, but I think that comes with anyone who gets pregnant,” Max said.

Max also believes that her 21-year-old half-sister will become a good mom.

“I told her that she should not underestimate her strength because she’s one of the strongest people I know,” she added.

She said the Eigenmanns are all behind Andi, including their dad, actor Mark Gil. She said they consider Andi’s baby a blessing.

“She has our dad, her mom. Ilang kaming magkakapatid, 6, and we are all supportive about it. I think it’s all she needs,” she said.

When asked if she hates the father of Andi’s child, she said: “No, no, no hate at all.”

As for her message to the guy, Max said: “Thank you, magiging cute ‘yong inaanak ko.”

Jaclyn Jose, Andi’s mom, has refused to divulge the name of the father. Read More

UK to apply EU court insurance ruling end 2012

Britain will apply a European Union court ban on sex discrimination in insurance premiums from the end of next year, a government minister said on Thursday.

"It is our view the judgment only applies to new contracts for insurance and related financial services entered into, on or after 21 December, 2012," UK financial services minister Mark Hoban said in a speech made available to the press.

"That means that any contracts with gender-sensitive pricing of premiums and benefits concluded ahead of that date can continue unchanged after that date," Hoban said.

Britain and other EU states must comply with a European Court of Justice ruling in March on the Test-Achats case.

The case was brought by Belgian consumer association Test-Achats and looked at whether an exemption in EU law allowing insurers to base premiums on gender was valid.

The bloc's top court ruled different insurance premiums for men and women were not compatible with the EU's charter of fundamental rights, which bars sex discrimination.

Legal experts say the ECJ ruling is significant for many insurers in Europe because they use gender as a risk factor to price life and general policies.

The Luxembourg-based court gave member states until December 21, 2012 to end such discrimination.

Hoban said there are early indications other EU states will interpret the ECJ ruling in the same way.

"That said, we fully understand the need for legal certainty. The European Commission has already said it will issue guidance on the interpretation of the judgment, and we welcome this step," Hoban said.

"However, we are continuing to press the Commission to make an amendment to the gender directive to give legislative effect to the judgment." Read More

Mark Hoban addresses insurance community

This morning Mark Hoban, Financial Secretary to the Treasury gave a speech to the London 100 Group at the City of London Club.
"It's a pleasure to speak with you today about the challenges and opportunities that confront the Insurance Industry. As with the entire financial sector, the Insurance industry faces an unprecedented period of regulatory overhaul and economic uncertainty.

"But we know that we are starting from a strong base.

"Indeed, the UK insurance industry accounts for almost a third of all financial service jobs in the UK.

"It controls over 13% of investments in the London stock market, which is more than held by pension funds, and significantly more than held by banks. It is the largest insurance centre in Europe, the third largest in the world, and accounts for 8% of total worldwide premium income.

"This isn't a position that the industry has earned overnight, nor is it a position that we are entitled to as a result of past triumphs.

"Rather, it takes innovation and adaptation to stay ahead of the game...

"But if London is to remain the best place to do business, then as markets, products and services evolve, regulation must evolve as well.

"The financial sector and the economy are still in the midst of a delicate recovery following the recent crisis.

"As we grow our economy and we reform our financial services, we are caught in what the Chancellor described in his Mansion House speech as "the British dilemma".

"One the one hand we want a strong, vibrant and successful financial sector to support economic growth and provide thousands of jobs across the country. On the other hand we cannot afford the sector to pose a risk to the stability and prosperity of the nation's entire economy, the last financial crisis cost the taxpayer billions of pounds.

"But this is a situation that we cannot afford to repeat.

"Or course, we're all aware that the last crisis was one of investment and retail banking excess and domestic and international regulatory failure.

"Though in the last crisis, the Insurance industry wasn't directly implicated and came out relatively unscathed...it is not entirely immune.

"Regulation of the financial system as a whole, needs to change."

Domestic regulation
"It was the failure to foresee and prevent the crisis that has undermined trust in the sector of course, but also in the regulatory authorities. The tripartite system failed spectacularly in its responsibility to monitor and mitigate the systemic risks before the crisis. We are addressing these failures.

"We are establishing a permanent Financial Policy Committee inside the Bank of England. Its job will be to monitor overall risks in the financial system, identify bubbles as they develop, spot dangerous inter-connections and stop excessive levels of leverage before it's too late.

"We are also abolishing the Financial Services Authority in its current form, and creating a new Prudential Regulation Authority with a focus on micro-prudential regulation. It will bring judgement to the vital task of regulating the soundness of individual firms that manage risk on their balance sheet, particularly banks and insurance companies.

"But we recognise, of course, that banks and insurers engage in very different types of business. The inherent characteristics of an insurance business model are different to those within a bank's. This is why we are proposing to provide the PRA with a specific statutory objective for its insurance responsibilities. Insurance regulation will not take a back seat to deposit-taker regulation in the PRA.

"Last week the FSA published the PRA Insurance Regulation document providing more information on the future regulatory approach in that sector. In particular, and in response to concerns expressed by industry stakeholders, the PRA will have a dedicated mutuals supervisory team in order to develop specialist expertise in the sector.

"The PRA will also be responsible for securing appropriate protection of policy holder expectations with respect to with-profit policies. Balancing the insurance objectives of policyholder protection and general objective of firm financial soundness.

"More widely, the new Financial Conduct Authority will play a critical role in consumer protection. Its single strategic objective will be to protect and enhance confidence in the UK financial system.

"In that role, the FCA will oversee the conduct of financial services firms, the operation of markets and the protection of consumers with new powers to ban the sale of toxic products.

"We recently issued the White Paper and draft legislation on these reforms. It is absolutely vital that we get these reforms right. We need a financial sector that continues to propel growth but doesn't put our stability at risk.

"But we can only get there through your help. I encourage you to work with Treasury officials as we consult on the White Paper and draft legislation."

International regulation
"But of course domestic regulation is not enough. Financial services are a truly international industry, and regulation needs to reflect that fact.

"There is a great deal of work happening at the European level as you are already aware.

"Firstly, I want to touch on the ECJ Test Achats case. A burning issue no doubt for many of you.

"As the Government has said before, we are extremely disappointed by this decision, but there is no right of appeal. The judgement goes against the grain of a common sense approach to equality. Of course, nobody should be treated unfairly simple because of their gender, but financial services providers should be allowed to make financial decisions on the basis of sound analysis of risk factors, including gender.

"However, we need to abide by the ECJ ruling so this morning I have announced the Government's position on the Judgment. It is our view that the judgement only applies to new contracts for insurance and related financial services entered into on or after the 21 December 2012. That means, that any contracts with gender-sensitive pricing of premiums and benefits concluded ahead of that date, can continue unchanged after that date.

"Early indications are that this is an interpretation shared across Europe. That said, we fully understand the need for legal certainty. The European Commission has already said it will issue guidance on the interpretation of the judgement, and we welcome this step. However, we are continuing to press the Commission to make an amendment to the Gender Directive to give legislative effect to the judgement

"Elsewhere in Europe, we have the important role of the new European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority.

"We are keen to work with EIOPA as it develops, and ensure that it delivers higher and consistent standards of supervision across the EU, and most importantly of all, helps create a level playing field across Europe.

"By doing so, EIOPA can take a major step in completing a single market in insurance, creating new international opportunities for the UK sector.

"Of course, however, the big ticket item is Solvency 2.

"Solvency 2 is vital to creating a deeper, single EU insurance market and helping to drive a more competitive and sustainable industry. Through Solvency 2 we must ensure that we deliver proportionate and risk based regulation, and do not arbitrarily raise requirements in a knee-jerk response to the last crisis.

"We have worked with the industry to identify the top priority issues for the UK, and to broker a sensible deal with the European Commission and other member states on these issues.

"We have made great progress. Not least by securing recognition across Europe that helping the industry to maintain its role as a stable long-term investor is critical to long-term economic growth. The Commission's proposal for a Matching Premium for UK annuities will be key to this.

"But the debate is not over, and we need to sustain our efforts over the next few months. I encourage you to stay engage in this debate.

"It is only through your engagement that we can build the solid evidence to base future regulation. It is only through such evidence that we can ensure that we implement regulation that is credible, effective and proportionate.

"And we've already seen how constructive engagement can be through our parallel reforms to the tax system. In particular, I know many in the Insurance sector have keenly followed our reforms to introduce an opt-in exemption from corporate tax for the profits of foreign branches of UK companies. This will make the UK a more attractive location for the headquarters of pan-European insurers. This change is a vital part of a shift to a more territorial system of taxation, reflecting the fact that UK business has become more internationally diverse.

"Ultimately if we fail to get regulation, and taxation, right for the Insurance secor, it won't simply be to the detriment of the industry, it will be to the detriment of the wider economy.

"It will impact on bank funding, on infrastructure investment, and it will impact directly on people across the country through their savings and their pensions."

Savings and investment
"All of you present know how intertwined the Insurance industry is with the country's savings habits. And as a Government we are committed to tackling the chronic lack of savings that preceded the financial crisis.

"Before the financial crisis, one in four households had no liquid savings

"UK household debt was almost 100% of GDP compared to 61% in Germany and 50% in France and even today, almost 60% of people do not have a pension.

"Instead, we want to build an economy more strongly built on the back of savings and investment. We are creating the right conditions to support higher savings across the board.

"By introducing a duty of automatic-enrolment on employers, more employees will qualify for a minimum quality pension scheme from 2012. That means another 4 to 8 million people can start saving, or can save more into a workplace pension scheme. And I know that this is something that the ABI have broadly welcomed.

"We have also removed the outdated requirement to annuitise by the age of 75, thereby giving people more choice and flexibility over how to use their savings.

"We are committed to ensuring that a greater and broader spectrum of society have the opportunities, capacity and trust in the system to take personal responsibility for saving.

"We have launched the Money Advice Service to ensure consumers have the skills and understanding to engage with the system. And I have to take this opportunity to thank Otto for all his work on this agenda and all the support he has provided to the Treasury.

"And, we are consulting on the development of simple financial products to ensure consumers have choice and confidence in their investments.

"Our goal is a savings landscape that creates the incentives for people to address their security and protection needs. Our challenge to you is how will you meet these needs?

"I'm sure you'll agree that we've come a long way in just a year. A long way to rebalancing our economy away from debt-fuelled consumption, to more prudent saving.

"And a long way to reaching a much needed settlement to the "British dilemma" and the role of the financial sector in our wider economy.

"We still have a long way to go and we are continuing to work tirelessly on domestic and international reform.

"It is in everyone's interest that we get these reforms right. And tt is vital that we continue to work with the industry, including those of you present today, to do so. I look forward to working with you in the years to come." Read More

Mutual Life Insurance Explanation And Story

Overview
There are two kinds of life insurance companies: Stock companies are publicly traded entities, while mutual insurance companies have no publicly traded assets. Mutual life insurance companies are owned by holders of participating life insurance policies that share company ownership benefits.

Identification
Mutual life insurance policy owners have certain benefits that are similar to those of public corporation stockholders. These benefits including being able to receive a portion of a firm's earnings through dividends and having company voting rights. Mutual insurance companies offer protection for policyholders by creating a pool of money to pay for covered losses. Unlike stock insurance companies, however, mutual insurance companies have no board of directors or shareholders, which can be both a blessing and a burden in terms of operational procedures and policies. The more mutual insurance policyholders there are, the larger the pool of money, but also the larger the amount of claims needed to be paid.

History
Mutual life insurance has its origins in seventeenth century England through the creation of a group called the Amicable Contributorship. The concept was soon thereafter transported to the American colonies. In 1736, Charleston, South Carolina's "Friendly Society" used the concept as a way to insure residents against property loss caused by fires. Benjamin Franklin then spread the idea further as he discovered that loss from fire was unavoidable. This resulted in the creation of the Philadelphia Contributorship for the Insurance of Houses From Loss by Fire, which developed further into what is known as mutual life insurance in modern times.

Geography
There are only five large countries that still have operating mutual insurance companies: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Spain. South Africa had mutual insurance companies in operation for an extended time period, but there are none operating as of 2009.

Benefits
In the United States, mutual insurance companies are frequently characterized for extremely high financial strength ratings issued by credit rating agencies such as Fitch, Moody's, and Standard and Poor's. The highest-rated insurance companies at all three of these rating agencies are mutual life insurance companies. Most mutual life insurance is expensive when compared to the term insurance that stock companies issue, but it is thought to be more beneficial and flexible due to its ease of convertibility.

Other Features
Mutual life insurance dividends issued to participating insurance policy holders are tax-free, as the IRS defines them as an overpaid premium return. The ease of convertibility associated with mutual life insurance enables you to use dividends from it to buy additional insurance or to reduce your premiums. You can also simply receive mutual life insurance dividends in cash.

New India Assurance tops auto insurance survey

Public sector insurer New India Assurance has been ranked top, while Anil Ambani group's Reliance General is at 10th in a customer satisfaction survey of auto insurance firms by market research firm JD Power.

Measured in a 1,000-point scale, the study that took into account 15 companies saw the top two places being occupied by nationalised firms.

"New India Assurance ranks highest in satisfying auto insurance customers in 2011, achieving a score of 804 and performing particularly well in the renewal/purchase process factor," JD Power said in a statement.

According to the 2011 India Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Index Study, customer satisfaction with auto insurance providers has an impact on consumers' intent to renew their policies and to purchase policies from the same provider for their next vehicle.

"Following New India Assurance in the ranking is The Oriental Insurance, which achieves a score of 802 and performs well in the billing and payment process and renewal/purchase process factors," the survey said.
The third place has been occupied by the private sector entity ICICI Lombard with a score of 801, it added.

The auto insurance customer satisfaction index chart, where four PSU firms have found berths, ranked Reliance General Insurance at the 10th with a score of 781.

The other insurance firms that have also been mentioned in the list are Tata AIG General (4th), National Insurance (5th), Royal Sundaram( 6th), United India (7th), Bajaj Allianz General (8th) and HDFC Ergo (9th).

"It becomes particularly important for insurers to ensure better customer management at branch offices, especially in terms of understanding needs and requirements, providing clear explanations of policy coverage, and courtesy and friendliness," JD Power Asia Pacific Executive Director Mohit Arora said.

As per the study, the overall satisfaction level stood at 796 in 2011, 8 points lower than that of 2010.

"The interaction factor declines most notably, decreasing by 28 points from 2010. Within this factor, satisfaction with branch office interactions has declined the most, followed by interactions with independent agents and brokers," it added.

The study was done amongst 5,284 auto insurance customers and it was based on six factors -- interaction, claims, product and policy offerings, renewal and purchase process, billing and payment process, and premium and price for coverage offered. Read More

Govt insurers rank high on client satisfaction in motor insurance

Government-owned non-life insurance companies fare better in customer satisfaction of motor insurance policyholders than their private peers. New India Assurance was ranked the highest in satisfying auto insurance customers followed by Oriental insurance and ICICI Lombard, according to a study done by JD Power Asia Pacific.

The 2011 India Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Index Study in its third year examined motor insurance policyholder’s experience with their insurer on six factors: interaction, claims, product/policy offerings, renewal/purchase process, billing and payment process, and premium/price for coverage offered.

It was based on responses from 5,284 customers in 20 cities across India who renewed or purchased an auto policy between January 2010 and April 2011 and had between 2.5 and 3.5 years of vehicle ownership experience. The study included 15 non-life insurance companies (11 private and the four government-owned public insurers).

The study found that although satisfaction with public insurers, as a whole remained higher than that of private insurers in 2011, the satisfaction level with public insurers decreased by 17 points from 2010, while satisfaction with private insurers improved marginally by three points. However, effective communication with customers remained a concern for both public and private insurers.

New India Assurance ranked highest in 2011 achieving a score of 804 out of 1000 point scale and performing particularly well in the renewal/purchase process factor followed by Oriental Insurance which achieved a score of 802 and performed well in the billing and payment process and renewal/purchase process. On the third place was ICICI Lombard with a score of 801.

The study however said that the overall customer satisfaction with insurance companies has declined from last year on the interaction parameter. Within this factor, satisfaction with branch office interactions declined the most, followed by interactions with independent agents and brokers.

The proportion of customers visiting insurer’s branch office nearly doubled in 2011 compared with 2010. In 2011, 46 per cent of customers indicated renewing or purchasing their policies from the branch offices. In contrast, fewer than one-fourth of customers in 2010 (24 per cent) had said the same.

“Therefore, it becomes particularly important for insurers to ensure better customer management at branch offices, especially in terms of understanding needs and requirements, providing clear explanations of policy coverage, courtesy and friendliness,” said Mohit Arora, executive director at JD Power Asia Pacific.

The study found wide variation between regions in the proportion of customers who filed claims. Approximately one-fourth of customers in the south and east regions filed a claim with their insurer in 2011, compared with less than 15 per cent of customers in the north and west regions.

Claims satisfaction was highest among customers in the north region. Customer satisfaction with insurance providers has an impact on their intent to renew their current policies and to purchase from the same insurer for their next vehicle. Read More

azkals vs sri lanka result* (azkals vs sri lanka, azkals vs sri lanka live stream, azkals vs sri lanka score, azkals vs sri lanka live, azkals)

MANILA, Philippines - If it were the strongest Philippine football team assembled, it wasn’t on full display last night as the Azkals salvaged a 1-1 draw against Sri Lanka in the 2014 Fifa World Cup Asian Qualifiers in Colombo.

Seemingly slowed down by unfamiliarity with the hard surface of the Sugathadasa Stadium’s pitch, the Azkals fell behind by goal and needed a header from substitute Nate Burkey (50’) and a great save from goalie Neil Etheridge in stoppage time to escape with the draw heading into Sunday’s second leg in Manila.

“Overall, we’re happy with the 1-1 result. At least we’re playing on Sunday without a deficit,” said Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta, who only watched the game on TV.

A 1-1 scoreline is surely more favorable for the Filipinos than an 0-1 deficit when they play again at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Sunday. A scoreless draw will be enough to earn the Azkals a berth in the second round against seeded Kuwait by virtue of winning on the away goal.

“With this, Sri Lanka will no longer play defensive (in the Manila game), they will surely go for goals and this will open up the game and I’m sure the Azkals will benefit from this, having the superior skills overall,” Araneta said.

If Sunday’s match ends up in another 1-1 draw, a 30-minute extension will ensue to settle the outcome of the tie. But if it winds up at 2-2, the Brave Reds will advance owing to higher away goals.

“We’ll go for a win to avoid complications,” the PFF head said.

The Azkals, having hard time adjusting to the hard field, played sluggishly in the first half, yielding a goal on the 43rd when Chathura Guranarathna blasted a 30-yard shot past the Phl wall off a free kick.

Fil-Am Burkey was at the right place at the right time in a key situation at the 50th, just 10 minutes after checking in for injured Phil Younghusband (hamstring). James Younghusband’s header off Chieffy Caligdong’s free-kick was partly deflected by Sri Lanka goalie Manjula Fernando but Burkey followed it up and headed it in for the equalizer.

“The team was quite sluggish in the first half, I would say they only showed 60 percent of their power. But they picked up in the second half and played 80 percent of their potential,” Araneta noted.

“They haven’t adjusted fully to the field, which you can see is really bad. They couldn’t really play well on that pitch. This was evident when Chieffy was going on a one and one and couldn’t control the ball because of the different bounce presented by the field,” Araneta added.

The Azkals nearly blew it on stoppage time when Anton Nimal Fernando found a clear path for a shot but Etheridge lunged and tapped it out. Read More
